The objectives of the Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography are as follow: conducting research; conducting archaeological and ethnographic field research; publishing scientific papers of the staff of the Institute; preservation, registration, cataloging, digitization of the intangible and tangible heritage of the people and other peoples of Tajikistan, which is stored in the museum collections of the Museum of Antiquities and the Ethnographic Museum named after M.S. Andreev, apartment-museum of Academician A.A. Semenov, various archives of the Institute; promoting the scientific, cultural heritage of Tajik people; developing cooperation and building network with representatives of various scientific and educational structures abroad; preparing specialists through magistracy, PhD course, thesis defense in the dissertation council of the Institute, through teaching at universities.
Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan (now the A. Donish Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography), was conceived as a multidisciplinary institution that develops the problems of the history of Tajik people from ancient times up to this day, leading research on the whole complex of sciences.
The Institute has six departments, as well as the National Museum of Antiquities of Tajikistan and the Museum of Ethnography named after M.S. Andreev. The Institute has a memorial scientific library named after A.A. Semenov, where manuscripts from 19th-20th centuries, as well as various kinds of scientific literature are kept.
The institute consists of three archaeological sites in Panjikent, Toguzak and Kubadian, as well as the Sarazm Museum Reserve. Archaeological research is being conducted jointly with the Institute of Oriental Studies and the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the State Hermitage Museum, and scholars from Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and China. Scientific research at the Institute is carried out on three fundamental themes as follow: the history of Tajik people, general patterns and specific features of the historical process using the data from archeology, ethnology, history and theory of Tajik arts.
