The missions of the Museum-reserve are:

  • to preserve cultural values and to transmit it to future generations;
  • to promote social cohesion, familiarize people to the knowledge of the history, preserve the culture of the people of Kazakhstan and to educate museum visitors and;
  • to implement comprehensive interdisciplinary study of the traditional culture of the people of the East Kazakhstan region, as an integral part of the traditional culture of the people of Kazakhstan.

The museum was opened in 1968 in the village of Butakovo at an eight-year school. It started as a school, then turned into a folk museum as a branch of the Leninogorsk museum. After becoming a regional ethnographic museum, it is finally designated as a regional museum-reserve.

In 2005, the East Kazakhstan Regional Ethnographic Museum received the status of a museum-reserve, a multidisciplinary institution, as the thematic scope of the museum’s activities expanded – history, nature, architecture. In addition, a zoo and two parks were passed on to the museum, where an open-air exposition was presented. On the territory of the reconstructed parks, natural landscape zones were created which include rare and cultivated plant species.

The general concept and short terms of the implementation of design solutions allowed to create a unique ensemble of historical monuments and natural environment. Museum exhibits, exhibition pavilions, sculptures, open-air entertainment and study spaces, landscape compositions – all this creates an amazing outline of the past and present.

Thus, for the first time in Kazakhstan, a multidisciplinary museum-reserve created that includes a traditional museum (three buildings – historical and architectural monuments of the late XIX-early XX centuries), a museum of architecture and everyday life unfolded under the open sky in the “Zhastar” ethnic park (14 monuments of folk architecture), Zhambyl leisure and recreation park and historical and archaeological complex Ak Bauyr. The left-bank complex spread out over an area of 120 hectares includes an ethnographic complex with 17 farmsteads of peoples living in the East Kazakhstan region, a military complex, a zoo, a botanical park, the City of Masters, the Blue Lakes family recreation area, and Silk Road exhibition  – the only in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Major Activities

To promote its collections and ethnographic knowledge, the museum systematically compiles programs designed for a permanent and potential audience, offering and conducting a variety of events, taking into account a differentiated approach to various groups of the population. The program of events proposed by the museum has been developed over 10 years and is designed for different types of audience: from the youngest visitors to the retirees of the rehabilitation center. In the working arsenal of the museum, there are more than 100 titles of lectures and excursions, more than 30 titles of mobile exhibitions and more than 30 names of mass events, etc.

The museum systematically plans and conducts charity public events for the “Umit” orphanage, an orphanage home. It also conducts cultural and educational work at the Rehabilitation Center for Children and the “Ulba” pensioner rehabilitation center and patronizes Sauletay Children’s Village.

In addition, for the popularization of historical and ethnographic traditions and to strengthen national and spiritual connections, museum developed excursion and tourist routes on museum buses.
