  • To strengthen capacities, increase participation, increase awareness among indigenous peoples of their own cultural values and their desire to participate in their own cultural revitalization;
  • To help indigenous peoples enjoy their rights and freedom in self-determining their own lifestyles and transmit their cultures with dignity;
  • To initiate and drive movements for revising related policies and laws to facilitate endogenous development processes and sustain ethnic identities;
  • To improve information systems and media development for public campaigns and dissemination to government and public agencies, thereby increasing understanding, acceptance, and support of indigenous communities and networks.

IMPECT is an indigenous non-governmental development organization founded and staffed entirely by representatives of indigenous groups and networks. The association focuses on development work within the populations of thirteen indigenous groups residing in the highlands of the northern provinces of Thailand: the Akha, Dara-ang Hmong, Kachin, Lahu, Lisu, Lua, Karen, Mien, Khamu, T’hin, Bisu, Mlabri, and Shan peoples. The goal of IMPECT is to develop a better quality of life for indigenous peoples living in highland areas and to enhance the capacities of community organizations and ethnic networks to sustainably address problems facing them, by themselves, through coordinating cooperative and effective work with nongovernmental organizations, government agencies, and other involved alliance organizations.

Major Activities
  • Cultural revival and alternative education: conducting research on traditional knowledge and developing curriculums for community schools that integrate indigenous knowledge and traditions; building the capacity of knowledgeable persons and community leaders to better transmit their traditional knowledge to younger generations; supporting community-based learning projects; and conducting training in skills facilitation, management of cultural revitalization, and educational processes.
  • Promotion of the environment and natural resources management: supporting processes to promote customary and sustainable natural resources management based on traditional knowledge and practices; conducting surveying and demarcation of lands; and mapping community land use.
  • IP movement and networks: enhancing indigenous peoples networking and cooperation in the joint management of protected areas and in indigenous people’s communities; improving collaboration between indigenous communities and authorities (local government, Office of National Parks, and Royal Forestry Department).
