Jagran Jan Vikas Samiti (JJVS) is a non-governmental organization based in Udaipur that focuses on the socio-economic improvements of the rural and tribal communities in Rajasthan, India. It is “dedicated to public awareness and self-development through cooperative efforts. JJVS was established in 1985 and founded by a group of people from Vali and its surrounding villages. The organization operates in tribal villages of southern Rajasthan while expanding its activities related to promotion of traditional system of medicines in 7 states. JJVS has its own field offices in Jaisamand, Vali, Kurabar and Dhariyawad in Udaipur and Pratapgarh districts of Rajasthan. The organisation works for the upliftment of socio-economic conditions of the less fortunate communities through its two main programs: Traditional System of Medicine and Community Development.

With the support of government and private organisations JJVS works with agriculture for increasing crop productivity; animal husbandry for milk, breed improvement and enhancement; land development for improving ground water level; women empowerment for their livelihood enhancement, health and education; and Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) for their capacity building in IFR, CFR and leadership issues.

The uniqueness of JJVS lies in dealing with traditional health healing practices. Since 1989 JJVS is engaged an identifying traditional health healer, known as Gunis, building their capacities, and skills, and creating floral biodiversity based resources to maintain the regular supply of herbal medicines.

JJVS is committed to strengthening rural communities through facilitating local resource based knowledge systems to improve the lives of the less fortunate in society. We create community organizations for villagers to advocate for local issues and problems

Major Activities

With the view to improving the living conditions of the community with special focus on women and children, the organization decided to execute specific and multifaceted programs under various activities. The details of same are given below:

HEALTH: The major focus is on promoting traditional knowledge of Gunis and creating environment for accessing various govt. health services. Health initiatives have been undertaken in an intensive manner from the district level to national level. Gunis (Traditional health practitioners) are experts who treat people for various diseases with their self- prepared herbal medicines. They learned this technique through “Guru-Shishya (teacher and taught) parampara from their ancestors. JJVS enhance their skills through various practical sessions, health camps, etc.

EDUCATION: In the sphere of education JJVS focuses on providing basic education, especially to women and adolescent girls, and accessing the educational rights through mainstreaming.

PEOPLES’ ORGANISATION: Since the inception of the organization, maximum participation of benefited community given due importance. The community is not only involved in active participation but also support and opportunities are provided for making joint efforts through forming people’s organizations for accessing their rights.

LOCAL GOVERNANCE: JJVS believes that living conditions of both the community and villages can be improved through improving the local governance and enhancing the level of participation of the community.

NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT: The life of village community is regulated and managed through natural resources i.e. water, land, and forest. The community needs to prepare for both accessing and managing these resources.

LIVELIHOOD: Due to backwardness and poor economic conditions of the operational areas, the community has limited livelihood opportunities. Therefore, the organization considers LIVELIHOOD as a major thematic area. As a part of same, we have focused on generating and strengthening existing of agro and non-agro based livelihood program.
