The main objective of the Museum is to collect and preserve, as well as to popularize valuable musical instruments related to the life and work of prominent musicians, cultural workers, and artists of the Republic of Kazakhstan and other ethnics according to the Museum domain.

Below are some of the Museum’s main tasks:

  • preservation, inventory, maintenance in an original form of an ancient musical heritage;
  • identification, collection, storage and study of museum objects and museum collections;
  • organization of scientific expeditions, scientific trips;
  • organization of concert programs;
  • collection and promotion of memorial musical instruments;
  • conducting research and study of objects of musical and historical heritage;
  • scientific, educational, excursion activities, mass cultural and other work based on the collections and studies of the Museum;
  • the release of various publications on the exhibits in the Museum, as well as stored in the fund.

On August 1, 1980, by the Kazakh SSR Decree, the Republican Museum of Folk Musical Instruments was established. On April 24, 1981, it opened its doors to the general public. Since 1990, it has been named after Yhlas Dukenuly, a famous composer and kobyzist of the 19th century.

Currently, the Museum has a unique collection of musical instruments, including both Kazakh folk instruments and instruments of the peoples of the world. The Museum located in the building of the former Military Officers’ Assembly of Verny city – a monument of architecture and history of the Vernensky period. The general fund is 1354, the main fund is 691, the scientific-ancillary fund is 663 storage units.

Major Activities

The Museum of Folk musical Instruments named after Ykhlas have a number of directions in the preservation and promotion of intangible culture. One of them is the Council of Masters organized at the Museum, which consists of famous master of making musical instruments. Under the authority of the Museum, the Council makes efforts to restore the old Kazakh instruments, takes part in the restoration of dombras of famous persons in culture.

The Museum holds an international scientific-practical conference every two years. The theme of the 2017 conference was “Memorial musical instruments: problems of study, collection, and popularization”. Along with this, the Art Council operates at the Museum. This Council, together with the management of the Museum, organizes traditional art evenings.

In addition to this, the Museum holds various festive events and special exhibitions.
