The history of the Arysh-Kench organization is connected to the formation of new buildings around Bishkek. From 1991-1996, developer-activists achieved the establishment of public-state management of capital construction, new building self-government committees, and the “Ashar” business project. However, there were many unsolved social problems (electricity, roads, drinking water, public transport, registration of title documents, etc.). To solve these problems, developer-activists created the NGO “Arysh” in 1999 and implemented a series of projects to empower the residents of new buildings in Bishkek through creating and training self-help groups.

Major Activities

From 2003 to 2012, Arysh-Kench carried out social projects to alleviate poverty in new buildings in Bishkek. The mission of the organization was “To improve the standard of living of the economically active population of new buildings in Bishkek, providing them with long-term access to a wide range of high-quality, financial and consultative services.”

In order to achieve the missions of livening residents of new buildings and solving new buildings’ problems on their own, Arysh-Kench formed SHGs (self-help groups). The operating principles were based on the methods of traditional mutual assistance of Kyrgyz people. Each group developed four aspects: cultural, economic, social, and community-based. Twelve new buildings had over 200 SHGs, with at least 10 members in each. Particular attention was paid to the cultural aspect. With this direction, activities aimed at respecting the environment and holding on to folk traditions.

In 2018, Arysh-Kench implemented its “Narktuu Jashtar” (“Knowledgeable Youth”) project. Within its framework, three videos, one theatrical performance on traditional knowledge, and a manual on traditional knowledge (“Salt Uluk”) were prepared together with pupils from the 4th and 7th grades of the schools from the new buildings.
