The Museum of the Cultures of Vietnam’s Ethnic Groups is in the center of Thái Nguyên City, about 80 kilometers north of Hà Nội on National Highway 3. The museum was built in 1960. At first, it was named Việt Bắc Museum, and carried out scientific research and taught the traditions of culture and revolutionary struggle history of ethnic groups in Việt Bắc. In 1976, the Việt Bắc autonomous area was dissolved. Việt Bắc Museum had been under the management of the Ministry of Culture and Information. Thus, the museum was converted from a general museum into a professional museum of ethnic groups. The Museum of Cultures of Vietnam’s Ethnic Groups is one of seven national Vietnam museums. Over the last fifty years, the museum has managed hundreds of collections, carried out nationwide research studies, and increased its total number of items to thirty thousand documents and objects. Thus, it was important for the museum to complete its indoor and outdoor display system to serve the domestic and international public at best.

At present, the display system of the museum is organized by language groups and local cultures, thus introducing the cultural identity of fifty-four people groups and their living environments.

The museum showcases an advanced modern display system for its 4.500 original documents and items, and 735 scientific additive documents. Computing, electronic equipment, and audio software help to simulate the landscapes and living surroundings of the fifty-four people groups.
