Wayang Ajen, domiciled in Bekasi, West Java, is an art center that aims to develop the Puppet Show of Sunda as a potentially unifying culture through the global expansion of Indonesian wayang. Wayang Ajen goes beyond the dimensions of space and time and transcends world civilizations through performances of a spiritual value that guide through the universal art of puppetry. From 2001 to 2014, forty-seven countries have been discovered by the Team of Wayang Ajen Indonesia.

The word Ajen was taken from Sundanese and means “price” or “value.” Ngajenan means “to respect” or “to appreciate.” Wayang Ajen was born from the young generation of puppeteers, in the Puppet Show of Sunda’s original tradition of creative exploration. Wayang Ajen is a new interpretation—a traditional reading with modern touches that makes it extraordinary. This revival of the Puppet Show of Sunda is adapted into a modern format with a dramaturgical concept approach. The Ajen Puppet Show, hereinafter Wayang Ajen, was created by Wawan Gunawan (Wawan Ajen) and its name was given by Dr. Arthur Ajen S. Nalan, M. Hum in 1998. The very first staged version, called “Song of Kurukshetra,” was performed in 1999 at Pekan Wayang TMII Jakarta, Indonesia.

The philosophy of Wayang Ajen is based on the dialogical process of an active successor young generation with a renewed respect for traditional art. The young generation sees tradition as dynamic, and the tradition is a source of inspiration. Wayang Ajen aims to provide an alternative puppet show, for the younger generation to appreciate and to see as a mirror (the Koran and the Koran sense of self). Eventually, the younger generation is expected to reach an “enlightenment” and reflect on what, who, and what lives in this world.

Wayang Ajen is a new style of puppet show that focuses on a selection of stories that are based on plays’ scripts. The play was made using sources from the epic Mahabharata or Ramayana; however, the play was arranged to have a more modern moral message and context. Wayang Ajen is a form of creative experiment with the Puppet Show of Sunda done professionally, using technology and collaboration with various media artists who appreciate and complement one another.

Development is to keep the tradition dynamic by constantly striving to reconstruct old patterns to adapt them to the conditions of the times, so that the puppet show can survive and thrive.

Utilization implies that the puppet show is not only a spectacle, but a new way of thinking. The Puppet Show of Sunda becomes a proper media room to discuss various issues in society.
